Special Admission
Visiting Students
Visiting student admission is for students who are currently attending another 4-year college or university and who wish to spend one or (a maximum of) two semesters at NYU. Students should work with their home institution to insure that the courses they participate in at NYU will transfer back to the school where they will receive their degree. Students who wish to matriculate at New York University and receive a degree from NYU should apply as transfer students, and should not apply for visiting student status.
Enrollment as a visiting student is offered only at the following NYU schools or colleges:
- The College of Arts and Science
- The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development
- The Gallatin School of Individualized Study*
* Please note: Students who enroll on a visiting basis at the Gallatin School will be eligible to participate in Gallatin courses only. You may not participate in courses at another NYU school or college by enrolling in at the Gallatin School as a visiting student.
How to Apply as a Visiting Student
To be eligible for consideration to participate in the NYU visiting student program for the Fall and/or Spring Semesters you must meet the following criteria:
- Currently achieving a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or better. Students who do not meet this minimum academic requirement will not be considered.
- Registered for full-time study at your home institution the semester prior to studying at NYU. For instance, if you wish to attend NYU in the fall 2008 semester you must be registered for full-time study (12 or more credits) at your home institution in the spring 2008 semester.
- Not currently on academic, disciplinary, and/or medical leave or probation at your current institution. Students may take a personal leave for the semester(s) they are studying at NYU if such a leave is required by their home institution to maintain matriculation.
- If you have applied to any undergraduate program at New York University within the last year and were not offered admission you are not eligible to apply as a visiting student. You must wait one full year to re-apply or apply as a visiting student.
Post-Graduate Students
Post-graduate student enrollment is for individuals who currently hold a B.A. or B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college or university and who wish to spend one or two semesters pursuing undergraduate course work at NYU.
Enrollment as a special post-graduate student is only offered in the College of Arts and Science.
How to Apply as a Post-Graduate Student
To be eligible for consideration to participate in our post-graduate student program for the Fall and/or Spring Semesters you should meet the following criteria:
- Must have completed your B.A. or B.S. degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.5 or better. Students who do not meet this minimum academic requirement will not be considered.
- If you have applied to any program at New York University within the last year and were not offered admission you are not eligible to apply as a post-graduate student. You must wait one full year to re-apply or apply as a post-graduate student.
Please also note that:
- Registration in either program is for undergraduate course work only.
- You may not register for more then two semesters of consecutive or non-consecutive study.
- All prerequisites for the classes you intend to take at NYU must be satisfied before you register for NYU courses.
- On-campus housing is NOT offered to special visiting or post-graduate students.
- Visiting and post baccalaureate students register the week before classes commence. As such, it is recommended that our visiting students have a flexible and robust list of courses in which they would like to enroll.
