Frequently Asked Questions

We usually encourage students to visit when classes are in session. Typically for us, this means September - November in the fall, and February - April in the spring. (We're holding final exams in December and May.) If you can't make it to New York during the school year, we would be delighted to have you visit during the summer. While there won't be as many students on the campus during the summer months, we do offer summer session courses, so there will still be lots to see and experience. It certainly is better to visit in the summer rather than not to visit at all! Whenever you decide to visit, please make reservations several weeks in advance. Our sessions tend to fill up quickly, especially during high school vacation periods.

Personal interviews generally are not part of our admissions process. Because of the high volume of applicants and visitors to NYU, we are unable to accommodate requests for personal interviews. The information sessions we offer are very comprehensive in nature. Most visitors find that attending a session answers most of the questions they have about NYU. If you feel there is information you would like to share with the admissions committee that is not addressed in the questions on our application, we encourage you to include an additional personal statement with your application.

Group information sessions are conducted by admissions officers Monday through Friday, except during University holidays. Counselors are available at the conclusion of each session to answer individual questions. Because of space limitations, we suggest that you make reservations as far in advance as possible, and at least two weeks ahead of your visit. Student-led tours are offered Monday through Friday throughout the year at the conclusion of our information sessions. We strongly encourage you to attend the information session before going on the tour. The information session, conducted by an admissions representative, provides a great general introduction to NYU, and covers topics such as academic programs, admissions criteria, financial aid, and student life. Yes, we host several Open House programs for freshmen during the fall. If you're on our mailing list, you will receive an invitation to these programs. This year's programs are on September 12th and 13th, and on October 4th and 11th. In addition, we will be hosting our annual Diversity Open House on October 24th. By attending these programs you'll have access to much more than basic admissions information. Typically, you'll be able to met with representatives from many of our offices dealing with student life, as well as deans, faculty, and current students from our colleges.

Setting up an appointment to visit with a specific academic department is usually not a part of the NYU visiting experience. Because of the volume of visitors we experience each year, our faculty would be overwhelmed with these requests. As an alternative, we would strongly encourage you to attend one of our Open House programs when faculty and departmental representatives are available to meet with prospective students.
